IPhone Explorer is a Windows utility designed to work in unison with iPhones so that users can browse their devices from their computers. This utility requires iTunes to be installed on the computer. From this point, you simply connect your phone to your computer via USB to create the connection and begin browsing the iOS file tree.

Because iOS is an operating system that appears to have only a front end from the device view, iPhone Explorer was created to allow users to also see the back end and manage files. This type of functionality gives users more control, and it ultimately allows them to manually fix problems if they have the know-how to do so. Once the iPhone has been connected to the computer, a file tree can be viewed inside of iPhone Explorer that can be explored and manipulated.

There is one way in particular that people are using iPhone Explorer, and that is to use it as a large storage device. You can simply create a folder on the iPhone using iPhone Explorer and store files inside of it. You can think of it like a large USB device that can be taken with you anywhere.

However, there are a few downsides to iPhone Explorer. Because the back end is well-concealed by Apple developers, many of the files within the file system have odd names, and it might be hard to decipher what it is you're deleting, editing, copying or modifying. Music in particular is hard to manipulate, as the files are titled with unrecognizable names. Photos simply cannot be found with iPhone Explorer, either.

It's not uncommon for iPhone Explorer to crash when files are being moved around or modified. At this point, the software is still quite unstable. In reality, making one small change, depending on what that change is, could damage the file system and the overall functionality of the device.

Overall, iPhone Explorer is a great utility for getting a look into the file system of your iPhone. However, if you aren't sure about what you're doing, it's recommended that you use it solely to create folders and store data within them.
